I’ve worked on a grid for a couple projects and this is the first one where I feel like I really nailed it. On the second page, I’m proudest of the small bird icons. They are unique to Merlin, but they aren’t very useful because you can accidentally click them when you’re scrolling or trying to click on a bird. I put them up top and added a darker color to indicate where the user is in the list. Overall I made sure everything has a rounded edge and added bright greens to make everything pop and feel more playful.

Notes on Original Designs

Main Screen
Main Screen
Main Screen
  • Icon can be simplified
  • Green is too cool-toned

  • Like the round icons

  • Grey on grey feels slightly clinical, want to go for a warmer palette.

  • Round edges of image

  • Sound recordings button has an awkward placement and low contrast

  • Right menu icons are tappable, are the only way to jump from family to family. If you misclick, you can open info on a bird when you didn't mean to.
  • Location and filter buttons' meaning are unclear

  • Sighting graph is hard to read at its size

  • Simplify tag next to name
