The Project

A physical ID can be lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed. With a mobile ID, you always have it on hand. The biggest barrier with digital IDs is that users don’t trust their information is safe. The goal of this project was to make a design that makes the user feel secure while emphasizing Maine's unique identity.

Research & Planning

To start, I researched the ways that mobile IDs have been envisioned in the past. Then, I started thinking of concepts and themes tied to the state of Maine. I wanted the main color to be blue to give it an ocean theme and integrate graphics that were reminiscent of stamps or inked illustrations.

Designing

I created a few style guides, but this is the one that I landed on in the end. I chose a monochromatic blue palette to symbolize security while also being bright and bold.

Iterating

I iterated for a long time to make sure I was communicating the necessary information as effectively as possible. I played with the idea of using cards that the user would drag between, but ultimately decided one a simple two-tab design. Much of my iteration was simplifying for ease of use and scannability.

Final Design

The final design is simple and clean, giving the user a sense of security. I simplified and saturated my colors, using a bold blue that stands out. In my earlier versions I had the Age Verification and QR Scan on different pages, but I combined them for easy access and readability. For example, in an environment like a liquor store, the cashier would be able to scan and see the user's age at the same time.
