Timeline: 5 Weeks, Fall 2025
Tools: Rive
The Project
Rive is a powerful new animation tool, and I planned to use its ability to animate vector paths to create an interactive experience that highlights the importance of shorebird conservation.
Sketches
Initial Tests
I created a pigeon to test out the style and used it to test Rive's animation capabilities.
Ideating
I kept working on the designs and playing with how I set up my State Machines.
Mishaps
Sometimes things went a little sideways.
Final
I added an illustrated background for my final. I also added an indicator for the population.
Reflection
The goal of my project was to spread awareness of a problem - the declining shorebird populations - in a way that was cute and engaging. Being able to get a grasp on each bird’s relative size to each other makes them feel more real, but especially when they all morph into each other. Being able to morph shapes like this is a fun aspect unique to Rive, but it also ties my project together by showing that shorebirds are all an interconnected part of our ecosystem.
This was my first time using Rive, and it was pretty overwhelming at first. I was able to wrap my head around it by piecing together what I know about Flash, After Effects, and Figma and thinking of it as a combination of the three. Starting with basic exercises was crucial because I immediately got myself in too deep with details before I had nailed down the mechanics. I had to go back to the basics and tutorials to understand what I was doing. Next, I tried to get the keyboard inputs to work in Framer. It displayed and the mouse moved, but the code overrides did nothing. I really wanted it to work on this website though, so I went back and hooked up my input to the three circular buttons instead. Overall I'm happy with the way this one turned out and I'm looking forward to seeing how Rive keeps developing.
