About
The goal of this project was to create a kiosk experience for a location that does not already have one. Bagel Basket is a small cafe in my hometown, York, Maine. It is a favorite spot amongst community members from middle schoolers to adults. Much of the town is seniors and older adults, which will be important to take into consideration because they will be reluctant to change and have a hard time using a kiosk for (most likely) the first time.
Approach
This project was instrumental in my development as a designer. I learned the importance of the grid and size hierarchy to create a harmonious design. I believe I’ve gained a designer’s eye for small details that I haven’t thought about before.
The final prototype is a combination of 15 weeks of work. This document includes a heuristic evaluation of a local restaurant that already has a kiosk, planning out the requirements for the project, creating mockups, a complete workflow diagram, wireframes, a styleguide, visual compositions, and finally, an animated prototype.
Process Document
If you'd like to see the beginning stages and extensive work that went into planning the kiosk, which includes a heuristic evaluation, project plan and mockups, or go deeper into how I designed specifications for buttons and grids, you can read my process document.
Workflow Diagram
Wireframes
I created wireframes for each page, so this is about half of the total that you can find in the process doc. The wireframes were created to the specifics I wrote down in my product requirements about functionality and interactions.
Color and Typography
For the color palette, I wanted to go with blue hues to represent the ocean and the natural beauty of the northeast, and for the button color I chose a greenish yellow for the buttons to create contrast within an analogous palette that feels modern and natural at the same time.
Visual Compositions
The visual compositions are built out from the wireframes using the colors and type hierarchy I set previously. The most important part of the visual composition for me was the grid system, which I elaborate on in the process document.
Conclusion
This project is my longest and most in-depth by far. Having control over every element of the design in this way was eye-opening as to how much work truly goes into designing a cohesive product.
